Anu Aga Most Powerful Woman of India : Anu Aga Biography:Bio-data:Profile:Website:Wiki

Anu Aga

Company: Thermax
Career: A businesswoman by fate, who changed an ailing company to one with profits of Rs 281 crore

The year 1996 marked the beginning of the reinvention of Anu Aga. Her husband, Rohinton Aga, passed away suddenly, leaving Thermax, the company he transformed from a small boilermaker into a leader in energy and environmental solutions, in Anu’s hands. This was a crucial period for Thermax as the company was in the midst of going public. A mere 14 months later, Anu’s 25 year old son Kurush died in a fatal car crash. If this wasn’t enough to bring Anu Aga’s life to a shuddering halt, Thermax began to unravel at its seams.

The culture that Rohinton Aga had built within Thermax apparently couldn’t deal with the complexities of an unplanned succession. A host of diversification into other areas such as co-generation of power, finance and software either went belly up or began to flounder. Also, industries that relied on Thermax’s products such as capital goods and textiles began to see a downturn, further affecting the company’s revenues even as costs were increasing. The company’s market cap nosedived from Rs 990 crore in 1996 to Rs 186 crore in 2000.

Today, Anu Aga is a posterwoman for Indian entrepreneurs and worth a whopping $1.1 billion, according to Forbes magazine. Thermax’s turnover has ballooned to more than Rs 3,246 crore. Its offices are sprawled across the globe in China, the UK and the US as demand for its heating, waste heat recovery and waste water solutions has been robust. From an abysmal Rs 13 crore loss in 2001, Thermax posted a net profit of more than Rs 250 crore in 2008.

How could Anu Aga accomplish all of this, especially in the face of such overwhelming tragedy? Aga turned to Vipasana meditation after her son’s death, which gave her the courage to pick up the pieces and move on. Aga had originally joined Thermax in 1985 as an HR head, but didn’t have much of a role in the operations of the company. “My corporate life lasted only 20 years,” says the 65 year old Aga. “I never intended to work in the company; I was interested in social sciences and ended up in the corporate by default.” Nevertheless, she had to galvanise herself into action. Aga sacked the entire board including daughter Meher Pudumjee replacing them with fresh members in an effort to turn the culture of the company around. She pruned employees, cut unnecessary investments in non-core businesses and hired the Boston Consulting Group to restructure the company.

Despite her legendary success with Thermax, Anu Aga has always harboured another passion inspired by Kurush. “For the past two years, education has become my priority,” she says. “This is where the company can make a difference, and it was my son’s wish that I did something for children.”

She has convinced the Pune Municipal Corporation that Thermax be allowed to adopt a government school from this year. Vidyaniketan, which comprises the best students from 26 government schools in the Pune region, will be supported by the company for schooling up to the 10th standard. This programme is an initiative of the Thermax Foundation the CSR arm of Thermax. Together with Akanksha an NGO specialising in mobilising funds for educating children Thermax is also training teachers who will work in government schools.

Anu has also conceptualised a programme called ‘Teach for India’. The concept first began in the late 1970s in the US. Wendy Kopp the founder of ‘Teach for America’ realised that if graduates were trained to teach and financially aided, they would go out and teach low-income communities. Thus, children in these communities could be helped in realising their dreams of going to university, and perhaps, then making a difference to society. “This programme will be launched in India next year,” says Aga. “I am busy travelling across the country to convince universities to realise the potential of improving our teaching skills through this programme.”

Sitting in a green carpeted room in Thermax House in Pune, Aga is busy making calls to various corporates in an effort to convince them to support her cause. She says Kopp, who she knows personally, and Shaheen Mistry of Akanksha had inspired her to bring this concept to India. “I have been asked to be on the board of various firms. But I have said no to all of them. Instead, I am on the boards of various NGOs,” she says, laughing at the hassles of entering corporate life again. She also keeps herself busy by campaigning for women’s rights. The company for the past three years, has spent 1 per cent of its net profit each year on CSR activity. What happens to Thermax while she is neck deep in education issues? “Don’t worry,” says Aga. “It’s in Meher’s hands. When she took over the company in 2004, she was hesitant. But now she won’t give it back to me even if I wanted it!”

Under Meher, Thermax has gone through a second phase of growth. Initially, this chemical engineer from Imperial College, London, stayed away from corporate life, sighting her two children as priority. But on realising that her mother had had enough of helming the company, she stepped in to fill her shoes. Meher is focused on turning Thermax into a company driven by research. “Green technologies are the way forward for Thermax,” says Meher. “We need to spend more to innovate and with Dr Mashelkar, scientific advisor to the government who is now on the Thermax’s board our direction towards research will be enhanced.” Thermax’s fate lies in how its leadership continue to innovate and grow. If Meher has her mother’s grit, resolve and nerves of steel, Thermax will be in more than able hands.

Vidya Manohar Chhabria Most Powerful Woman of India : Vidya Manohar Chhabria Biography:Bio-data:Profile:Website:Wiki

When Manu Chhabria died in April 2002 and Vidya, 55, took over the reins of the Jumbo Group, few felt that she would be able to survive the street fight with UB Group supremo Vijay Mallya.

The odds were stacked against her. The fact that Mallya has finally settled for peace is being seen within industry circles as a victory for her.

Twice cited by Fortune amongst the 50 most powerful women in business internationally (44th in 2002 and 38th in 2003), Vidya is firmly in control of the $2 billion Jumbo group.

Aided by her second daughter Komal Chhabria Wazir, her brother Niranjan Thakur and a band of high-profile executives, she has not only fought off rivals but also grown the business. The high watermark was when she got SABMiller as a joint venture partner in Shaw Wallace Breweries.

Like her late husband, Vidya is a Shikarpuri Sindhi known best for their financial acumen. After Partition, her family had settled down in Bangalore. When she married Manu Chhabria in the early 1970s, he was working in the family electronics shop in Mumbai.

But he wanted to move to Dubai in order to realise his dreams of making it big. Leaving her eldest daughter Bhavika behind, Vidya went with her husband to the land of promise. The rest is history.

Jumbo Group’s flagship company, Jumbo Electronics Company Ltd (LLC), was founded in 1974. The company is now the largest distributor of consumer electronics, IT and telecom in west Asia. It is the largest distributor of Sony products in the world.

So long as Manu Chhabria was there, Vidya was rarely seen as a part of the Jumbo business, preferring to play the role of homemaker. After his death, she came to occupy centre stage.

Leaving the day-to-day running of the business to executives, Vidya spends most of her time in Dubai, though she visits Mumbai occasionally.

The management discipline closest to her heart is human resource development especially in terms of training, development and motivation. She often tells her friends that any organisation is only as capable as its people.

An avid reader and traveller, Vidya is known to be fond of Indian music and cuisine. With Mallya becoming a friendly neighbour, she sure will have time to indulge in her hobbies.

But that is only one problem off her back she has another one to straighten out. Her eldest daughter, Bhavika Godhwani, raised the banner of revolt over an year back demanding her share of the Jumbo empire. The matter is yet to be settled, though the family dirty linen is no longer being washed in public.

Sonia Gandhi Most Powerful Woman of India : Sonia Gandhi Biography:Bio-data:Profile:Website:Wiki

Sonia Gandhi (born December 9, 1946), is an Indian politician and the president of the Indian National Congress (Congress Party). Also, she is currently the chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance in the Lok Sabha. She is the Italian-born widow of Rajiv Gandhi.

Born Sonia Maino in Orbassano (8 km from Turin, Italy), she met Rajiv Gandhi, who later became Prime Minister of India, while he was a student at Cambridge University and she a bar-maid in England. They were married in 1968, after which she took up residence in India. She adopted Indian citizenship in 1983, fifteen years after her marriage to Rajiv, when, it is speculated, she realized that her husband's fortunes as prime minister might be affected by her Italian citizenship. The couple had two children, Rahul Gandhi (born 1970) and Priyanka Gandhi (born 1971).

Gandhi did not enter politics until after her husband's assassination on May 21, 1991. Following his death she was pressured by the Congress Party to enter politics and to continue the party's dynastic tradition of being led by a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

In 1998 she formally entered politics, assuming the helm of the Congress Party and declaring herself a candidate for Prime Minister. Largely through her family name, she was able to draw large crowds and nearly single-handedly revitalized the party. However, she remained a somewhat enigmatic figure, and her opposition (chiefly the Bharatiya Janata Party) constantly played off the fact that she was foreign-born and was not a fluent Hindi speaker until she entered politics, frequently asserting that she had no qualifications other than her name.

She rose to become Leader of the Opposition in the 13th Lok Sabha, and in the 2004 election launched an aggressive campaign to unseat the ruling Hindu-Nationalists. She had been tipped to be the next Prime Minister of India following her party's surprise victory in the 2004 Lok Sabha election. On May 16 she was unanimously voted to lead a 19-party coalition government.

However, on May 18, a day before her scheduled inauguration, she addressed a meeting of Congress lawmakers and declined to become Prime Minister. Amid indignant shouts from her supporters, she said "I request you to accept my decision and to recognize that I will not reverse it. ... It is my inner voice, my conscience." Lawmakers surrounded the podium and begged her to reconsider. Later, hundreds massed outside Gandhi's home in New Delhi. Feelings ran so high that a former provincial Congress legislator held a revolver to his head, threatening to commit suicide, before being disarmed ten minutes later. Distraught Congress workers smashed window panes at the party office to express their frustration. Congress leaders also resigned en masse in another attempt to get her to reconsider. Congress sources said Gandhi was tired of the Hindu nationalist campaign against her foreign origins. Some also said that her children asked her to decline, fearful of the assassination threat.

Manmohan Singh was appointed Prime Minister instead, with her support.

Indra Nooyi Most Powerful Woman of India : Indra Nooyi Biography:Bio-data:Profile:Website:Wiki

India has a long history where women’s have shown that they are not only the homemaker, however, with their sheer strengths and courage, they have ruled over India from the Medieval History period of India take the example of Razia Sultan, then Rani Laxmi Bai, then Sarojini Naidu, then Indra Gandhi, then Ashiwarya Rai and latest entrant in the block is the Indra Nooyi, a superwomen, who has been placed 4th in the list of worlds topmost influential women’s by the Forbes Magazine.

Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi is her full name and she belongs to the Southern Indian city of Chennai. She was born in 28 October 1955 in Madras, now Chennai. She has done her graduation from Madras Christian College (MCC) in Chemistry, Physics and Math. On completion of her graduation she went to Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta for doing Masters in Finance and Marketing. Soon after completion of her MBA she joined ABB and then Johnson and Johnson (J&J) in Mumbai. One of her achievement with J&J is her close association with launch of the sanitary napkin “Stayfree”. From there she has been no stopping her life.

However, her career profile was not satiating her wishes to do more in life and she persuaded her parent to let her study at Yale Management School in US. She completed her Master’s in Public and Private Management form Yale. Here in US before landing in the Pepsi in 1994, she had worked with Boston Consulting Group and Motorola. Indra coaxed the CEO Roger Enrico of the Pepsi to follow-up the company’s restaurant division, including brands such KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, as the chief strategy officer.

Nooyi not only shows tenacity for follow-up, but she equally emphasized in the Mergers and Acquisition. This was bolstered by the acquisition of the Tropicana and Quaker fruit juice brands. As a typical tycoon of the business from her acumen she has predicted the slowdown in the popularity of aerated soft drinks in the markets worldwide. That’s how she has enhanced her position in the business world where for a woman it’s very difficult to leave any mark on the corner room office of the big conglomerate. She is the one who has meticulously planned for the foray of Pepsi into the sport drinks market in association with Gatorade.

Her quick decision making ability and sticking to the work until it’s got accomplished has drawn this comment from the Enrico that “If she gets an idea, she goes after it. There’s no stopping her.” No doubt her firmness and go getting attitude has won her laurels in the company and this helped her to build a strong foundation in the career graph to reach the top echelons in the organization where many people just day dreams to reach. As of now she is the only Indian woman to become the Chief Executive Officer of the more $ 25 Billion Multinational, and perhaps the first Indian to reach to this level. “As of now” has been deliberately being used so as to see more and more Indian transcendent to that level in future.

For Indira this has been a both tough and exciting experience. As she has said in her own word that being a woman, immigrant and colour made it thrice difficult for her to reach to this destination, but only mantra which she followed during the course of time was working hard twice as the male counterpart.

Living up to the moment and enjoying every thrills coming on the way is the best strategy to go unhindered. Indra connection with her India is conspicuous by looking at her attire. In most of the office ceremony she wears sari to show that her heart beats for India and her culture. Most of the woman would be envying her knowing to this fact that she has a great boss both in office and in home. The way she is balancing her office obligation with similar ease she take cares of her household stuff. It’s she an icon to be followed and emulate so that a few things if not all. She has been daughter, a wife, a mother and last but not the least a business woman who has been spearheading in every direction whichever she heads to.

The faculty members of IIM Calcutta has brought out this facts to the media that she has been a very mediocre student in the campus, however Nooyi has surpassed everybody’s imagination, when it was announced that she was going to replace the Steve Reinemund, CEO of PepsiCo. This has lit up fire every mediocre soul that if she can achieve this insurmountable hierarchy nothing is impossible for the determined and strong willed person, the only thing being required is the perseverance.

Indra Nooyi lives in Greenwich, Connecticut with her husband Raj and their two daughters. Indira Nooyi very chirpy and has a great sense of humour. She has the inclination towards arts which is supported by the fact that she is a member of the Boards of the Lincoln Center for the performing Arts in the New York City. Besides that she has been a member of the Boards of various organization prominent amongst them is the Motorola and Yale University.

Nature wise she has been simple and prefers to avoid controversies. Recently while delivery the speech at the graduating ceremony of Columbia Business School she has stirred a controversy by mesmerizing her childhood days. She said that for remember the name of the five continents was a tough task for her in the geography class, so she remember Africa for the small finger, Asia for the Thumb, Europe as the Index finger, South America for the Ring finger and North America as the Middle finger. She justified the analogy of the five fingers with the continent based on there economic and political standing world forum. However, this has instigated furors and she immoderately apologized for the same.

However, Indra Nooyi is the truly global in her thinking keeping a wide perspective about the world and has great intellect.

How to Maintain friendship : Friends are Forever

Best friends require one-on-one contact to survive. Telephone calls and getting together are musts for best friends to continue.

In fact, probably the quickest way to end a friendship is to neglect it and sever contact.

Yet it is hard to make time in a busy day and busy life to maintain our friends. But you don't have to have hours to spare to maintain a friendship.

Instead try the following to keep from neglecting your friends:

* Send frequent email. Email is a boon for a quick note.
* Call once a week. Telephone calls do not take long.
* Keep in touch through brief messages left on answering machines.
* Send an occasional card. Funny and/or appropriate cards take minutes to choose and address.
* Exercise together. We all have to exercise. It is more fun with a friend, plus, there is no better place for talking than a walk in the park.
* Clean house together. This is another must do and two makes cleaning fun instead of boring.
* Send pictures. A picture is still worth a thousand words.
* Go to lunch at least once a month. More often would be better.

* Be a good listener; refrain from offering advice or moralizing.
* Respect your friend's point of view. Different personalities can complement each other; it isn't always necessary to see eye to eye.
* Never betray a trust. Trust, when violated, can ruin even the best friendship.
* Support and praise your friends; ignore their failures and imperfections.
* Never resent a friend's success. Instead, strive to admire her achievements.

Flexibility is always important for maintaining friendships. Be understanding when your friend has a last minute change in plans. Learn to accept "I'm sorry to cancel, but we will have another time together Sunday."

When paths begin to separate (you are married; he isn't or you have a baby; she is still childless) at forks in the road of life, that is the most important time of all to stay in touch with friends.

When there is conflict, it must be resolved for friendship to continue. Confrontation is one way to resolve conflict. Talking it out is another.

A cooling-off period is sometimes necessary when conflict has occurred. Once you reinitiate conflict, it may not even be necessary to discuss the conflict.

How to Build Friendships from Casual Friends

In most cases, the transition from acquaintance to friendship occurs gradually. We reach out to offer friendship by offering a potential friend caring, listening, talking, sharing, accepting, and affirming. It takes time and effort to build a friendship. They are built slowly, slowly, slowly...

Yet, nothing can add more to your life than having truly intimate friends. "Just friends" is a goal worth pursuing!

Friendships can take up to three years to build! And building friendships is much the same for children as adults, but a bit quicker!

Self-Disclosure builds friendships.

Self-disclosure is usually the first step in establishing a confidant. And it is scary because of the potential rejection factor. Do it anyway!

Start by sharing a few private thoughts and/or feelings with one person you might want for a close friend. If the person is responsive, he/she will usually share a personal thought or two with you.

If he/she is not responsive to your overtures, don't think of this as a rejection.People may be non-responsive for reasons of their own or merely as a perception of yours. Nevertheless, they can't be rejecting you because they don't even know you yet.

Listening and acknowledging builds friendships.

Often when your child, lover/partner, or friend tells you a story or voices a complaint, he/she is just asking for acknowledgment.

This does not mean that he/she wants agreement or compliance; it merely indicates a desire to be heard and understood.

Try these three steps to acknowledgment:

1. Repeat back.
2. Don't invalidate.
3. Don't try to change.
4. Don't problem solve.

Many conflicts in your personal relationships can be avoided if you will take the time to acknowledge others feelings and points of view. For more information about acknowledgment, click here.

Listening and attending builds friendships.

Paying attention to someone is called "attending." It means that your ears, your eyes, your body and your feelings are all focused on that person at one time. Attending is a very important part of any relationship. It includes:

1. Being there physically
2. Focusing
3. Eye contact

Looking at and focusing on another person shows that you are "there for him/her." For more information on attending, click here.

Talking Is a Primary Building Block of Friendships.

Talking is an integral component of friendship.

When a friend talks and reveals ideas or feelings, he/she is expecting shared information in return. When the talk is not equal, the person talking feels as if the listener is uninterested.

In fact, the person who is always the listener is really playing the role of a counselor, not a friend. Anytime you have been talking for more than a minute or two without participation from the person you are talking to, you are lecturing, bossing, or putting that person in the role of a counselor.

Loyalty, Equality, and Respect build friendship.

Friends are equal. Without equality, you can't have a close friendship.

Friends are loyal and trustworthy. No one can confide in someone they can not trust to be loyal and to keep his/her secrets.

Friends have similar values. Our value system is so important to us that our friends' values must be close to our own or we will not have respect for this friend.

Friendship is Good for the Body and the Soul : Friends are our truest treasures

Friends are our truest treasures. How many times have they: Made us laugh when we felt like crying over a bad mistake? Made us feel loved when our boyfriends (or girlfriends) broke up with us? Gave us the courage to go back to school or to change careers? Like armor, good friends make us almost invincible, capable of warding off the blows life occasionally deals us. Because of their steadfastness, we see setbacks for what they are: temporary.

Because friends accept us for who we are, we gain the confidence to dream great dreams—and to make them real. Friends liven up our days with their twisted humor, their honest answers, and their ability to bear our gloating when we beat them at golf or tennis. We can even trust them with our most embarrassing secrets! What a relief it is for us to reveal our true selves to someone!

It’s no wonder, then, that medical researchers have found that those who have friends tend to be happier, healthier, and live longer than those who do not. In fact, friendship has numerous physical and spiritual benefits.

First, you should know Know “Thyself”

What does knowing “thyself” have to do with finding friends? Well, before you can start your quest for new friends, you have to know what type of friends will be compatible with you. That means you need to get to know the “real” you.

Coming to grips with who you really are takes some soul searching. Here are some questions to get you on your way:

What Kind of Person Am I?

Are you a morning person, or do you come alive when the sun goes down? Do you love to gossip, or are all secrets safe with you and expect everyone else to be the same? Are you habitually late, or always ten minutes early? Do you exercise religiously, or are you a master couch potato? Do you freak if a picture on your wall is a hair off center, or is your house a perfect simulation of a tornado strike?

Everything mentioned above has a bearing on what type of friend you would be compatible with. Write a brief bio on what kind of person you are, making note of your temperament, foibles, likes and dislikes. What do you like about yourself the most? What would you change?

Take your time and ponder on it for several days. If you get stuck, ask a family member whose opinion you value or one of your present friends who you really trust. Once you know who you are, it is easier to find the type of friend you can establish a lasting relationship with.

What Do You Do With Your Spare Time?

Do you own a parachute or two? Do you love to knit so much that you, your family, and your neighbors have more sweaters than any of you can possibly wear? Do you golf every weekend, weather permitting or not? Have you ever spent three consecutive hours talking on the phone with a friend? Did you see every film nominated for an academy award in 2002? Then you are serious about your favorite pastime!

Make a list of all your favorite pastimes and hobbies, no matter how mundane it may seem. Make a list of a new hobby or pastime that you would love to try. Then decide which ones you prefer to do alone, and which ones you would love to have a friend participate in.

Basing friendships around activities is a great way to establish instant rapport, as well as create amble opportunities to have shared experiences, which are a keystone of a long lasting friendship.

In Conclusion...

The benefits of having good friendships are enormous, so take the time to get to know yourself well. List your favorite pastimes, as well as the pastimes you would like to try in the future. Decide which ones you'd like to share with a friend. Once you are done, you will be well on your way to making new friends and having fun.

What Is the Definition of a Friend and Friendship

One thing that makes being a human being so interesting is the fact that not one of us is exactly alike. We all have our own likes and dislikes, needs and desires. We also have our own unique idea of what a friend is, what a friend does, and what a friend definitely does not do.

Define A Friend

Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary says that a friend is “one attached to another by affection or esteem”. I'm sure you'll agree with that definition, but there is so much more to add to it if you want to find friends that you can have a long lasting, mutually beneficial, relationship with.

My own definition of a friend is a female or male that I can talk to about anything at anytime. Communication is very important to me, so I like to have friends that I enjoy conversing with whether in person, on the phone, or via e-mail. A friend must be trustworthy and honest. After all, if I'm going to share most of my inner most thoughts and secrets with someone, she has to know how to keep a confidence, and not exploit my weaknesses. He cannot be a habitual liar, something I detest, and should not be closed-minded, but enjoy trying new things. I prefer a non-smoker who drinks in moderation.

Of course, the definition I just gave is my short version; I could go on for pages and pages, but you now have an idea of what I mean by writing a definition of a friend.

Use Your Present Friends As a Example.

A good way for you to figure out what to put in your definition of a friend is to take a good look at your present friends. What do you like about them the most? What is it about that person that makes you want to spend your time with him or her? What are some of the qualities that he or she has that you could do without?

Sometimes there is no easily definable reason you like someone. You just do, plain and simple. Well, that’s okay too. Just add to your definition, I just have to like her, no real reason required.

Don't Be Inflexible

Of course the likelihood of you finding one person that perfectly matches your definition exactly is about as likely as finding a sugar substitute that really tastes like sugar, so be flexible. This definition just gives you a broad idea of what you're looking for, and what to avoid. For example, one of my best friends is a chain smoker who has two “hollow legs”, but I love her anyway.

Now sit down and write your own definition of what a friend is. Once you have your wishes and desires down on paper, it will make the task of finding new friends all the more easier.
