Case against Dhoni and Harbhajan
MUZAFFARPUR: A criminal case was filed in a court on Thursday accusing Indian
cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh with 'hurting'
fans by staying away from the Padma awards function.
Dhoni and Bhajji were to be honoured with the Padma Shree by President Pratibha Patil in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Senior advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha filed the case in the court of the CJM Ramdarash seeking to book the cricketer under sections 499 (defamation), 500 (punishment for defamation), 503 (criminal intimidation) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace).
Ojha alleged that the two cricketers insulted fans and dishonoured the prestigious award by staying away from the function.
The petition is likely to come up for hearing on Friday, he said.

Colors beats Star Plus with highest viewership
Colors TV channel has emerged as the leader in viewership in the Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) segment in the week ending 11 April, breaking rival Star Plus’ reign of nine years.
The nine-month-old channel, owned by Viacom18 Media Pvt. Ltd, scored 292 gross rating points (GRP) across all time bands in that week, compared with 267 GRP pulled by Rupert Murdoch’s Star Plus, according to TAM Media Research Pvt. Ltd, the Mumbai-based television audience measurement firm.
Loyalty factor: Colors chief executive Rajesh Kamat says the channel will stabilize at around the 290 mark in TAM ratings. Madhu Kapparath / Mint
GRPs are a total of television rating points (TRP) over a period of time. TRP is a measure of the percentage of viewers watching a particular programme at a given time.
TAM data show Colors’ viewership share in the Hindi GEC space has risen consistently since late 2008, while Star Plus has lost some share. In the last four weeks of 2008, Colors’ share was 22% against Star Plus’ 26%. It rose to 24% in the first four weeks of 2009 while Star Plus remained at 26%. In the week ended 11 April, Colors went past Star Plus with 26% share against the latter’s 23%.
“It has been a close race for the top spot between Star (Plus) and Colors since the beginning of this year, especially in the past four weeks when we even surpassed them on reach and prime time GRPs... We knew that being No. 1 was around the corner but it will be a fierce weekly battle from there on,” said Rajesh Kamat, chief executive of Colors.
To be sure, top viewership for a week is not a clear sign of leadership because there have been instances where close rivals have gained top slot for a week only to lose it in the next.
“Leadership is a position that needs to be held week after week, consistently and steadily. We are confident that Star Plus will regain its leadership,” a spokesperson for Star Plus said.
Star Plus is the flagship channel of News Corp.’s Indian subsidiary Star India Pvt. Ltd. Viacom18 is a venture of US-based Viacom Inc. and India media group Network18 Media and Investments Ltd. (Mint has a content sharing arrangement with CNBC-TV18 news channel, which is owned by Network18.)
Significantly, Colors’ feat came close on the heels of it discarding the free-to-air (FTA) revenue model in favour of pay beginning 1 April. Pay channels charge a subscription fee, unlike a FTA channel, which can be accessed by viewers free of cost.
Typically, viewership falls when a channel is no longer FTA. Kamath said that Colors lost market share from 298 GRPs to 292 but overall with a sustained rise in its share, it managed to beat Star Plus in the week ended 11 April. Star Plus is also a pay channel.
“Going pay did impact our viewership...but the good news is that there is no sudden or drastic jerk... We know that we are stabilized around this 290-mark because we have made sure the loyalty factor in our content is strong enough for it not be affected by the channel going pay,” he said.
Colors declined to disclose its subscription price but a Delhi-based multiple system operator that provides cable TV services said Colors and Star Plus charge around Rs21 each, excluding 10% service tax.
“Apart from a solid content and distribution strategy, Colors also paid a hefty carriage fee of more than Rs90 crore to distributors when they launched... This got them a good placement and visibility,” said Vikki Choudhry, managing director, Home Cable Pvt. Ltd.
Colors’ steady rise in viewership has been attributed to its good programming strategy.
“Advertisers want to be on Colors because it has a good mix of programming. They reach out to all age groups such as youth through their reality shows, or families through their serials,” said a media buyer closely involved in deals with Hindi GECs. He declined to be identified.
Currently, the channel charges Rs75,000 to Rs1.10 lakh for a 10-second spot on prime time shows. In comparison, Star Plus charges Rs90,000 to Rs1.5 lakh for 10 seconds.
In the Hindi GEC segment, Colors and Star Plus were followed by Zee TV (236 GRPs), NDTV Imagine (90 GRPs) and Sony Entertainment (78 GRPs).

Born into a Bengali family, Kishore Kumar's original name was Aabhas Kumar Ganguli. His parents were advocate Kunjalal Ganguli and Gouri Devi, who hailed from a very well-to-do family. Abhas was the youngest of four siblings. The other three were Ashok Kumar, who was the eldest, Sati Devi and Anoop Kumar.
Abhas was still a child when his eldest brother, Ashok Kumar became a famous Bollywood actor. This gave Abhas or Kishore Kumar the apt opportunity to get an easy break into the Hindi filmdom. Kishore Kumar did not have a formal training in music, but it was just a matter of time before he started taking a keen interest in movies and music. He was a great fan of legendary senior Indian actor-singer, Kundan Lal Saigal and he soon started mimicking his style. His gradually developed his own yodeling style of singing after music director, SD Burman advised him to stop copying Saigal.
In the Bollywood music circles, yodeling style of singing soon became Kishore's trademark. And in the time to come, Kumar sang in various languages like Hindi, Bengali that was his mother tongue, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam and Oriya. Music director S. D. Burman appreciated Kishore Kumar's singing style and is credited for boosting Kumar's singing talent. He asked Kishore to sing for films like Munimji (1954), Taxi Driver(1954), House No 44 (1955), Funtoosh (1956), Nau Do Gyarah (1957), Paying Guest (1957), Guide (1965), Jewel Thief (1967), and Prem Pujari (1970).
Asha Bhosle biography singer India
With versatility as her middle name, the famous Asha Bhosle still sings the way she used to during her prime. Though she is over 70 years of age, she still continues to give stiff competition to singers who are half her age. This talented singer can sing a ghazal and a peppy cabaret number with amazing levels of energy and style. Be it the romantic "Oh Mere Sona Re" or the sensuous "Aaiye Meherban" or the peppy "Kambakth Ishq", Asha Bhonsle can add life to any song. Her life history is no less than a roller coaster ride. Check out the biography of Asha Bhonsle as given here.
Asha Bhosle was born on 8th September, 1933 in a Marathi family. Her father was the renowned singer and actor Dinanath Mangeshkar. He trained her in classical music at a very young age. Though she had her brush with acting as a child artist, it was quite natural for her to choose playback singing like her older sister Lata Mangeshkar. Sadly, her father expired suddenly in the year 1942 causing much commotion in her family. They had to move from Pune to Bombay and settle again. Asha got the chance to sing in a Marathi film when she was ten years old. Her initial years saw a lot of struggle since her elder sister Lata was in much demand and unfair comparisons rose every now and then.
In the year 1948 she got to make her playback debut in Hindi in a film called Chunariya. The song was called "Saawan Aaya" and Asha was noticed for her different playful voice. When she was 16, she eloped with Lata's personal secretary Ganpatrao Bhosle and married him much against the family's wishes. The marriage failed miserably and Asha Bhosle was driven out by Ganpatrao following some misunderstanding. She came back to her maternal home with two kids and pregnant with the third one. However, this did not deter her from pursuing her dreams and she continued to sing for films. During 1950's she got assignments that were rejected by leading singers like Geeta Dutt, Lata Mangeshkar and Shamshad Begum.
These songs were basically meant for the sidelined roles like vamps, cabaret numbers or C-grade movies. It took a lot of perseverance from Asha to make it to the top. Her hard work and efforts paid off when she was given her first big break with the movie C.I.D (1956). Under the patronage of O.P Nayyar she got more and more offers and began belting out hits after hits. She tasted huge success with the movie Naya Daur (1957). With O. P Nayyar, Asha gave out hits after hits like Aaiye Meherban, Deewana Hua Badal, Isharon Isharon Mein, Aao Huzur Tumko, Ude Jab Jab Zulfein Teri, etc. The last song she recorded with him was "Chain Se" of the movie "Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye" (1974) and then parted ways.
She was noticed by other music directors like S.D Burman after the phenomenal success of these songs. She and S.D Burman created many hit soundtracks for movies like Kaala Pani, Kaala Bazaar, Insaan Jaag Utha, Lajwanti, Sujata and Teen Deviyaan. Most famous of these songs were Asha Bhosle's duets with Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar. After the mid 60's Asha collaborated with R.D Burman and reached the peak of her career. The movie "Teesri Manzil" released in 1966 shot her to fame and she won popular acclaim. The duo of Asha and R.D Burman produced hits after hits and their collaboration resulted in marriage.
Asha became the voice of Helen, one of the most graceful dancers of that era. Helen would visit Asha during her recordings to understand the feel of the song and choreograph her steps accordingly. Some of her evergreen hits featuring Helen are Piya Tu Ab To Aaja (Caravan), O Haseena Zulfon Wali (Teesri Manzil), and Yeh Mera Dil (Don). A popular song "Jaane Jaa" from the movie Jawaani Diwaani (1972) required her to switch from high pitch to low almost simultaneously which she did with utmost ease and perfection. The song "Dum Maro Dum" of the movie "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" showed an entirely new side of her talent. The romantic "Chura Liya Hai Tumne" from the movie "Yaadon Ki Baarat" is hummed even today and is considered to be one of the most romantic songs of this century.
Asha proved critics wrong in 1980's when she sang beautiful Ghazals for the movie Umrao Jaan. She proved that she can sing classical with as much panache as other genres. The great composer Khayyam told her to sing two notes lower than usual. The rest as they say is history! The songs turned out to be chart toppers and till date are sung with much elegance and respect, though it is picturized on a courtesan. In the 90's she experimented with peppy numbers and produced hits like Tanha Tanha, Yaire, Kambakth Ishq, Chori Pe Chori, etc. she also a number of pop albums to her credit and has acquired international by singing with artists like Boy George, Black Eyed Peas and cricketer Brett Lee. She has many awards including eight Filmfare awards and two National Awards apart from numerous other accolades. Time has really not touched her voice and she sounds exactly like what she used to sound 30 years back.

Lata Mangeshkar biography singer India
Lata Mangeshkar is one of the best singers of the Hindi film industry. She is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most recorded artist in the world. It is estimated that she has more than 30,000 solo, duet and chorus backed songs in 20 different languages from 1948 to 1987. Now, it must way over 40,000! Lata Mangeshkar was born on 28th September, 1929 in a place called Indore. Her father Dinanath Mangeshkar was a renowned classical singer himself. Lata was introduced to music at a very young age. The life history of Lata Mangeshkar is truly fascinating. Read this short biography of Lata Mungeshkar.
Lata Mangeshkar was very young when her father passed away, thus making the family dependant on Lata. To take care of her family's economic situation, Lata acted in as many as 8 films from 1942 to 1948. She debuted as playback singer in a Marathi film named Kiti Hasaal (1942). Unfortunately the song was edited out. Her first Hindi playback was for the film Aap ke Sewa Main (1947) but she did not get noticed. At that time, the film industry was ruled by female singers who had heavier and huskier voices like Noor Jehan, Shamshad Begum and Zohrabai Ambalewali. While auditioning for the movie Shaheed (1948), she was rejected on the account of her thin voice! But Ghulam Haider saw the potential in her and gave her a chance to sing in the film Majboor.
The song Dil Mera Toda finally got her noticed and it was touted as her breakthrough song. In 1949, she had four major hits from the films Barsaat, Andaaz, Dulari and Mahal. The song "Aayega Aanewala" from Mahal was a huge hit and Lata secured a firm position in the industry. The husky voices of all other singers became obsolete in front of the high pitched voice of Lata Mangeshkar. The music industry had a huge makeover with the arrival of Lata Mangeshkar. By the late 50's, the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar known as Asha Bhonsle also came into the scene and they both were touted as the unbeatable voices of the industry.
Lata rose to fame rapidly and made her indelible mark in the industry. She has sung with famous singers like Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, etc. She has perfected almost every genre of music. Her success and determination made her one of the most powerful women in the industry. She refused to sing for the great composer S.D Burman due to some misunderstanding and also stopped singing with Mohammed Rafi. Her power was so immense that they had to come back to her. She actually monopolized the music industry and every music director wanted to work with her. She understood the requirement of each song and sang flawlessly.
Lata Mangeshkar has been honored with innumerable awards but the one that truly deserves a special mention is that she is the only second singer in the non-classical category (after M.S Subbulakshmi) in India to have received the highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna. She has received three national awards and eight Filmfare awards after which she stopped accepting awards in order to promote new talent. She continues to sing every now and then for Hindi movies and perform live. Truly a living legend, Lata Mangeshkar has a talent that is second to none.

Rahul Gandhi biography, Indian Politician
Rahul Gandhi (born June 19, 1970) is a young Indian politician, a rising member of the Indian National Congress.
Gandhi is the son of Sonia Gandhi, the powerful Congress President and wife of the late Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister (also the youngest) who was assassinated in 1991 by Tamil militants. Rahul was only 14, when earlier, his grand-mother, also Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by Sikh militants in 1984. His great-grandfather was Jawaharlal Nehru, the distinguished leader of the national freedom struggle and the first Prime Minister of Bharat. Thus Rahul Gandhi is the scion of Bharat's most powerful political family, a legacy filled with history, charisma, power, drama and trauma.
Although educated at The Doon School, as well as St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, Harvard and Trinity College, Cambridge, Rahul, like his father, uncle and grandmother, attended university without completing a degree. He worked as a financial consultant in London, before he returned to Bharat in 2002 to start a software company. An outdoors man and sports-lover, Rahul has a young Colombian girlfriend.
Although since 1998 his mother has been the Congress President and Leader of the Opposition, Rahul showed little interest or involvement in politics But late in 2003 he began obtaining media coverage, and did not discourage speculation about his arrival in politics. Appearing with his mother in public events and Congress meetings, Rahul also went to Pakistan on a goodwill visit to watch historic cricket between the two nations. In May 2004, he contested and won by a wide margin a seat in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament from the Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh where so many of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty have established their political careers. His campaign was directed by his younger sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and his victory generated considerable media excitement and enthusiasm amongst the younger citizens of the country. He leads a new coterie of young MPs, all sons of distinguished Congressmen. And with the Congress Party in power, leader of a coalition government, Gandhi's power will only expand.
Gandhi is cultivating support from young Indians by working up the media's hypes, and becoming an aggressive, though perceivably arrogant politician. He stays away from the scandals of coalition politics and major national issues, and although he holds no other office and concentrates mainly on constituency issues and the politics of Uttar Pradesh, it is widely speculated that Congress President Sonia Gandhi is quietly grooming him for the top job, the office of Prime Minister, which she renounced for herself. It is predicted that Rahul will soon control a major executive post within the Congress Party or a Cabinet portfolio. It is also possible, but impropable, that he may lead the Congress Party in the next elections, possibly by 2008 or 2009. He will then be 38 or 39, just as his father was 40 when he rose to the PM's office.

Dhoni pips Sachin as 'most valuable' IPL player
Sachin Tendulkar may have just been immortalised in wax by Madame Tussauds of London, but Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni has beaten him
Celebrities at IPL Season 2 IPL 2: The Big buyouts to be the most valuable player in this year’s edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) that begins in South Africa on Saturday.
The Chennai Super Kings’ skipper attracted the highest individual insurance cover of $10.5 million, or Rs 52 crore, as the eight IPL team owners finalised policies for all 120 auctioned players against personal accidents, mediclaim and baggage losses with Oriental Insurance Company (OIC) for a total cover of $286 million, or Rs 1,340 crore, an OIC official said.
The team franchisees have also taken additional cover for match cancellations, at an average of Rs 7 crore per match, totalling a sum assured of Rs 413 crore, said the OIC official who requested anonymity.
He, however, refused to reveal the premium for the policies that provide a total cover of more than Rs 1,750 crore. Oriental Insurance structured the entire cover along with its re-insurers. Six franchisees have already paid the premium, said the official.
Tendulkar excited over Madame Tussauds' honour
It was another record but of a different kind for master blaster Sachin Tendulkar. Madame Tussauds flew the cricketer's wax figure some 7,000 km to meet the legend in person here on Monday and made him the first Indian sportsman to be featured by the London-headquartered studio.
And Tendulkar was truly delighted, coming face to face with the likeness of his wax figure at the downtown Taj Lands End Hotel.
"I am very impressed with the figure and delighted to be honoured by Madame Tussauds," said the renowned cricketer, who holds several records to his name, including the batsman with the highest number of Test centuries.
"It is the first time we have ever launched a figure overseas. But we really wanted Sachin to see his likeness before it 'meets' the public," said Liz Edwards of Madame Tussauds, London.
"The figure will now be returning to London to join the ranks of sporting greats past and present in our sports zone. There will also be a cricketing challenge around the figure where guests can test their skills against the master-blaster'," she said.
"We know it will be a huge hit with fans."
Tendulkar had met the sculptors of Madame Tussauds here earlier in the year to be measured and photographed for the creation of his figure. He also donated the cricket whites that his striking wax double is wearing.
The cricketer follows in the footsteps of Bollywood giants Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, who have been honoured by Madame Tussauds.
According to the London-based firm, Tendulkar's figure was created at their studios in west London over a three-month period, starting with a a perfect clay sculpture from which the moulds are made for an amazingly life-like wax figure.
Then it was over to a team of skilled hair and colour artists to insert the hair by hand and to build life-like skin tones using layer upon layer of oil paint - every freckle, mole, dimple and wrinkle are accurately reproduced, the firm said.
"London and India share a great passion for cricket and we are delighted that Madame Tussauds has unveiled a figure of Sachin Tendulkar," said Sally Chatterjee, the interim chief executive of Visit London, the agency that promotes tourism to the British capital.
"With the International Cricket Council's World Twenty20 coming to London this June more cricket fans will have the opportunity to come face to face with one of their sporting heroes."
Madame Tussauds, which has its attractions in London, New York, Las Vegas, Washington, Amsterdam, Berlin, Hong Kong and Shanghai, has been making wax figures for over 150 years.
Sachin Tendulkar introduction, india's best batsman ever
Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar (born April 24, 1973 in Mumbai) is an Indian cricketer widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. In 2002, Wisden ranked him the second greatest Test batsman of all time, next to Donald Bradman, and the second greatest one day international (ODI) batsman of all time, next to Viv Richards. In September 2007, the Australian leg spinner Shane Warne rated Tendulkar as the greatest player he has played with or against. Tendulkar was the only player of the current generation to be included inBradman's Eleven, the dream team of Donald Bradman, published in his biography. He is sometimes referred to as Little Master or Master Blaster.
Tendulkar is the highest run scorer in both Test matches and ODIs, and also the batsman with the most centuries in either form of the game. The first player to score fifty centuries in all international cricket combined, he now has more than eighty international centuries.
On October 17, 2008, when he surpassed Brian Lara's record for the most runs scored in Test Cricket, he also became the first batsman to score 12,000 runs in that form of the game, having also been the third batsman and first Indian to pass 11,000 runs in Test cricket. He was also the first player to score 10,000 runs in one-day internationals, and also the first player to cross every subsequent 1000-run mark that has been crossed in ODI cricket history. In the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, Tendulkar surpassed Australia's Allan Border to become the player to cross the 50-run mark the most number of times in Test cricket history, and also the second ever player to score 10 Test centuries against Australia, after only Sir Jack Hobbs of England more than 70 years back. Tendulkar has been honored with the Padma Vibhushan award, India's second highest civilian award, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, India's highest sporting honor.

Five Indians in Dhoni led Wisden Dream Team
The prestigious Wisden Cricketers' Almanac named Mahendra Singh Dhoni as skipper of a Dream Test XI that includes Indians Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan.
Sehwag was chosen as the 'Leading Cricketer in the World for 2008'.
The explosive opener became the sixth player to be honoured with the award instituted in 2004.
Dhoni has taken India to the threshold of world's best, leading India to three series wins on trot -- against world champions Australia, England and New Zealand. He has won five of his first seven Tests and drawn two.
India's recent success in Tests was recognised by the prestigious publication with as many as five players making the cut.
Australia's Ponting and Mitchell Johnson, South African Graeme Smith and Dale Steyn, West Indies' Shivnaraine Chanderpaul and England's Kevin Pietersen are the other players of the Dream Test XI selected by former cricketers Ravi Shastri (India), Ian Bishop (West Indies) and Ian Smith (New Zealand).
The three former players picked the best eleven taking into consideration the opposition, performances in 2008, the amount of Test cricket they played in the year, the quality of their opponents, and that indefinable blend of class and form.
"The 146th edition of the Wisden Cricketers' Almanac has nominated an elite team. The team which has been selected with Test match cricket - the sport's ultimate format," according to Wisden editor, Scyld Berry.
Berry said that Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the "unanimous choice as wicketkeeper and No. 7."
"He won the votes of Bishop and Shastri as captain. Smith, however, gave his vote as captain to Graeme Smith who led South Africa to victory over Australia in Australia sealed the deal," Berry said.
"Bishop selected him because of his charisma, which seems to permeate the Indian dressing-room and bring the best out of his team. The former West Indian pacer also noted that India lost in Sri Lanka when Dhoni sat out the series.
"Among other reasons, Shastri liked the way he handles the media in a media-frenzied country, and is immensely composed," Berry was quoted as saying in Cricinfo.
Smith was chosen as the vice-captain of the team.
The opening pair were unanimously agreed to be Sehwag and Smith, the two leading Test run-scorers of 2008.
Gautam Gambhir, Sehwag's opening partner, who averaged 70 against formidable opposition, was also a strong candidate along with other left-handed openers, Chris Gayle, Simon Katich and Andrew Strauss. But Smith was the pick.
Wisden said that Sehwag has taken opening Test innings to a "new level."
"Virender Sehwag had to beat off the strongest of challenges by Graeme Smith to become the Leading Cricketer in the World for 2008. He sought, and often achieved, mental domination from the first ball by scoring faster than any other opening batsman has ever done on a regular basis in Test cricket," it said.
Tendulkar secured the votes of Shastri and Smith to be No. 4. Bishop went for the promise (and all-round fielding) of A.B. de Villiers.
Harbhajan won a three-way tie on the convener's casting vote. He took 63 wickets in the year and played an important role in two hard-fought series against Australia.
Zaheer pipped Ryan Sidebottom and Ishant Sharma for the new-ball slot.
The left-handed seamer has been architect of India's recent win at home and abroad. Zaheer can use either a new or old ball to full effect and can also bowl long spells.
The Wisden Test XI:
Virender Sehwag (India), Graeme Smith (South Africa, vice-captain), Ricky Ponting (Australia), Sachin Tendulkar (India), Kevin Pietersen (England), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (West Indies), Mahendra Sing Dhoni (India, captain), Harbhajan Singh (India), Mitchell Johnson (Australia), Dale Steyn (South Africa) and Zaheer Khan (India)

And it is not the uneducated class that is practicing female foeticide. The act of female foeticide prevails more in the educated and affluent society.
